REVISION OF ELECTORAL ROLLS

Shillong, September 16, 2004: The intensive Revision of Electoral Roll 2005 for 32-Mawkyrwat and 35-Langrin Assembly Constituency will commence from October 5 upto November 19, 2004. This was informed by the Sub-Divisional Officer, Civil Sub-Division, Mawkyrwat.

Draft publication of Electoral Rolls will take place on December 12, 2004 and the period after filing of claims and objection and reading of relevant parts/sections of Electoral Rolls in Gram Sabha/Urban Local bodies and Residents Welfare Association meeting will be between December 22, 2004 and January 24, 2005.

Disposal of claims and objection will be on February 21, 2005 while the preparations of printing of supplements of additions, deletions and correction will be on March 15th, 2005.

The Final Publication of Electoral Rolls will be on March 21, 2005.

RONGRAM HIGHER SECONDARY SCHOOL INAUGURATED

Shillong, September 16, 2004: Minister for Higher &Technical Education, PWD etc Dr. Mukul Sangma formally inaugurated the Rongram Higher Secondary School at Rongram, about 18 kms from Tura on September 15, 2004. The occasion was marked by cultural programmes, including songs, dances and a play performed by the school children besides speeches from a host of public leaders and government officials.

It may be mentioned that the deficit Secondary School at Rongram was upgraded to Higher Secondary School through the efforts of its local MLA, Mr Sengman R. Marak and the foundation stone for the school building was laid on October 18, last year. The sanction of Rs. 2 Lakhs for the building was given by the Deputy Commissioner, West Garo Hills to complete the construction. This Higher Secondary School now caters to the needs of those students of the area who cannot afford to go outside to pursue higher studies.

Addressing the gathering as the Chief Guest at the inaugural function, Dr. Sangma congratulated the people of Rongram for their achievement, saying that their cooperation had borne fruit in the form of the Higher Secondary School. Expressing concern over the increasing number of dropout cases, he said that one of the reasons was that most students who come to town for higher studies have no guardians and are left on their own. To avoid this, he said that the Government is encouraging the upgradation of all existing schools in the rural areas.

Replying to the memorandum submitted by the School, the Minister promised to get the sanction for the construction of the road to the school and also to look into their other requirements. He also said that all efforts will be made to look after the best interest of the teachers and to see that they get the same benefits enjoyed by the teachers of government schools.

Local MLA and Parliamentary Secretary i/c Agriculture, Mr. Sengman Marak and Parliamentary Secretary i/c Border Area Development, Mr. F. P. R. Sangma who were the guest of honour and the special guest respectively also spoke words of advice to the students and stressed on the importance of education for all round development.

BDO Rongram Development Block, Mr. M. T. Sangma, Inspector of Schools, Mr. P. K. Hajong, Commandant 2nd MLP Bn., Mr. F. D. Sangma, former Minister , Mr, K C Momin, students leader, Rakkan Sangma, Lecturer Don Bosco College, Sanggra Sangma were among others who spoke on the occasion. The function was chaired by Deputy Chairman GHADC, Mr J. R. Marak, while the welcome address was given by the Headmaster of the School, Mr. F. Sangma.

EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS TO REMAIN CLOSED ON SEPTEMBER 18

Shillong, September 16, 2004: In a notification issued here by the Commissioner & Secretary, Government of Meghalaya, General Administration (A) Department, it is hereby informed that all Educational Institutions in East Khasi Hills District will remain closed on Saturday, September 18, 2004 on account of Unitarian Anniversary Day.

Dr. MUKUL SANGMA INAUGURATES 33/11 KV SUB-STATION AT AMPATI

Shillong, September 16, 2004: Meghalaya PWD Minister, etc Dr. Mukul Sangma inaugurated the 1 6 MVA 33/11 KV Sub-Station at Ampati in the presence of a large crowd including public leaders and government officials on Tuesday, September 14, 2004. With the commissioning of this Sub-Station, the Ampati Sub-Division and surrounding areas would get better power supply in terms of stability and quality.

Dedicating the Sub-Station to the people of the area, Dr. Sangma said that the present Government was prioritizing the development of power sector in the State because without power no other development process could take place. Terming the Sub-Station as the ‘developmental milestone’ he said that the Government is trying to generate power locally from coal and through mini hydel power projects for domestic use. He congratulated the people responsible for expediting the project and added that both the State and Central Government are working together to provide electricity to every household in every village by 2012.

Reiterating that peace is a prerequisite for all developmental process, Dr. Sangma sought the people’s cooperation to make the ongoing tripartite peace process between the Center, State Government and ANVC a success. He also informed that for the year 2003-2004, the State has received the highest sanction since the attainment of Statehood for development of roads and bridges out of which, schemes worth Rs. 12 crore has been earmarked for Garo Hills alone.

Earlier, Dr Sangma, who is also the Minister for Higher & Technical Education laid the foundation stone of the new building for Ampati Secondary School, which was damaged by the storm recently. This new school building is being constructed on an interim relief of Rs. 3 lakhs through Betasing CD Block.

Along with district officials and public leaders, Dr Sangma then proceeded to Latrigre, under Ampati Sub-Division to inspect the site for construction of a suspension bridge over Dilni river and also for construction of the approach road to Ampati Songmong (main village) for which the estimate is being prepared by the PWD and construction work will begin shortly.

In the evening, Dr Sangma inaugurated the Community Hall at Gasura, Ampati Sub-Division which was construction under SGRY scheme at a cost Rs. 2.20 lakh. The inaugural function was chaired by BDO Betasing Block , Mr S.N. Sangma.

It may be mentioned that on September 15, 2004 another 33 KV Sub-Station at Jengjal under Rongram Block was also commissioned.

SCIENCE & ENVIRONMENTAL FAIR HELD AT UMSNING

Shillong, September 16, 2004: The 2 days Block Level Science and Environmental Fair held at St. Michael’s Higher Secondary School, Umsning concluded on September 15, 2004. A total of 6 schools participated in the Fair organised by the Office of the Block Development Officer, Umsning and sponsored by the SCSTE, Shillong. The 2 days programme saw the participation of children in quiz competitions, debates, extempore speech, essay, drawing competitions and presentation of models.

The Chief Guest in the closing function was EAC, Ri Bhoi District, Mrs. A.L. Mawlong.

DC’s ASSENT REQUIRED FOR CONSTRUCTION PURPOSES

Shillong, September 16, 2004: The Deputy Commissioner, Ri Bhoi District, Nongpoh has informed that since areas from Lad Umroi to Umdohbyrthih-Nongtraw-Kyrdem including portions of Umroi are covered under the purview of the proposed Shillong Bye Pass duly acquired and handed over to the PWD, permission should be obtained from the Deputy Commissioner, Ri Bhoi District before carrying out any construction works i.e. offices, residences etc.
