POLICE PERSONNELS AWARDED

Shillong, October 29, 2004: The Meghalaya Governor, Mr M M. Jacob, yesterday gave away Medals to Police Personnel for their various achievements, at the Durbar Hall of the Raj Bhavan, Shillong. Also present on the occasion were the Meghalaya Chief Minister, Dr. D.D. Lapang, Meghalaya Home Minister, Mr H.D.R. Lyngdoh and Meghalaya Chief Secretary, Mr. P..J. Bazeley. Altogether 24 police personnel from all ranks were awarded.

While congratulating the awardees for their achievements, Mr Jacob in his speech, said that Police force in Meghalaya is one of the best in the country. Stating the fact that Meghalaya has seen excellent improvement in the security scenario, Mr Jacob also felt the need of setting up counter insurgency training centre to maintain peace in the region.

The recipients of Police Medals for Gallantry were Smti. C.A. Lyngwa, MPS, Additional Superintendent of Police and Mr. M. Kharkrang, MPS, Additional Superintendent of Police. Police Medal for Distinguished Service were awarded to Mr. L.Sailo, IPS, Director General of Police, Mr. W.R. Marbaniang, IPS, Additional Director General of Police (L & O) and Mr. A. Pradhan, IPS, Additional Director General of Police (SB). The recipients of Medal for Meritorious Service were Mr. T. Dkhar, IPS, Director Civil Defence and Commandant General Home Guards, Dr. S.B. Singh, IPS, Inspector General of Police (SB), Mr. R.P. Agrawal, IPS, Inspector General of Police (CID), Mr. B.L. Buam, IPS, Deputy Inspector General of Police (ER), Mr. B.R. Rana, IPS, Deputy Inspector General of Police (CID), Smti. C.D. Shira, MPS, Deputy Superintendent of Police (CID), Mr. E. Kurkalang, Deputy Superintendent of Police, MPRO, Mr. L. Rabha, (Retd) Subedar Major, (L) Mr. B. Ryntathiang, Inspector, Mr. B. Purkayastha, Inspector, Mr. Dominic Shylla, Inspector, Mr. Daniel Chawngthu, Sub-Inspector and Mr. Abinash Marak, Lance Naik. The recipients of President’s Fire Service Medal for Meritorious Service were Leading Fire Men (LFM) Mr. Prebilson G. Momin,, Mr. Krelly Lyngdoh, Mr. Chandra Kt. Kalita, Mr. Preslington Marjoin Kharbani, Mr. Yearningstar Lyngwa, and Mr. Ramgati Yadav.

It may be mentioned that altogether, 100 Police personnel have been awarded for various achievements since the inception of the State of Meghalaya.

OFFICIAL WEBSITE OF THE INDUSTRIES DEPARTMENT TO BE LAUNCHED

Shillong, October 29, 2004: The Meghalaya Chief Minister, Dr. D.D. Lapang, will inaugurate the launching of the Official Website of the Department of Industries on November 3, 2004 at 3:00 P.M. in the Conference Room of the Main Secretariat Building, Shillong. This was informed by the Director of Industries, Meghalaya, Shillong.

NATIONAL DAY FOR DISASTER REDUCTION OBSERVED AT NONGSTOIN

Shillong, October 29, 2004: The District of West Khasi Hills today join hands with the rest of the country to observed the National Day for Disaster Reduction.

As part of the celebration, the District Administration, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), organised different programmes such as essay writing, drawing and painting at the Trysem Hall, Office of the Deputy Commissioner, West Khasi Hills District, Nongstoin.

TRAINING FOR BLOCK MASTER TRAINERS AT NONGSTOIN

Shillong, October 29, 2004: The District Administration, West Khasi Hills, Nongstoin, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), organised a three days training programme on Disaster Risk Management (DRMP) for Block Master trainers on October 12-14, 2004 at the Trysem Hall, Nongstoin. The programme was inaugurated by the Additional Deputy Commissioner, West Khasi Hills, Mr. E. Kharmalki, in the presence of the Assistant District Project Officer UNDP, Ms. D.L. Kharkongor and the Assistant Enforcement Inspector, Mr. R. Lyngdoh. The training was participated by Government officials, teachers, gramsevaks, NCC, Scouts and Guides from all Blocks of the District.

During the training, the Assistant State Project Officer UNDP, Mr. S. Bhattacharya, Assistant Soil Conservation Officer, Mr. P. Rapthap and the Police Department, enlightened the trainees on various aspects of how to prevent, mitigate and prepare for natural disasters.

The last day of the training was attended by Rev. Fr. James, Mr. S.G. Reade Commandant of Civil Defence and the District Medical and Health Officer, who further enlightened the trainees on the needs and importance of proper disaster management in the District in order to minimize loss of lives, social and economic losses.

UMTA UPPER PRIMARY SCHOOL PARENTS MEET HELD

Shillong, October 29, 2004: The Umta Upper Primary School, Umta, Ri Bhoi District, organised a Parents Meeting on October 28, 2004 in which parents, local headmen, teachers and students attended the programme. The Meghalaya Minister for Taxation, Mr. J.D. Rymbai was the Chief Guest, while the Meghalaya Deputy Speaker, Mr. P.W. Muktieh was the Guest of Honour.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Rymbai lauded the School Managing Committee for holding such an important programme that brought the parents together to get first hand information of the development and functioning of the school. Stating that education is a must for every child in this competitive world, he urged upon the students to work hard and be sincere in their studies so that they can reap the benefits and become assets to their parents and the society as a whole. He expressed hope that with the cooperation of parents and availability of opportunities offered by the Government through the Post Literacy Programme and SSA Project, the present literacy rate of the District at 36.31% will go up.

Others who spoke on the occasion were the Meghalaya Deputy Speaker, Mr. P.W. Muktieh, local MDC, Mr. D. Khymdeit, Deputy Inspector of Schools, Mr. J.S. Khonglah, Mr. B. Teron and Mr. R.K. Rongpei.

RAID MADAN KYRDEM SPORTS MEET CONCLUDED

Shillong, October 29, 2004: The three day Raid Madan Kyrdem Sports Meet, organised by the Raid Madan Kyrdem Sports Committee, concluded at Mawkyrdep playground on October 28, 2004. In all, 16 schools participated in the meet. The Chief Guest at the concluding function was the Meghalaya Parliamentary Secretary, Mr. S.W. Rymbai, while Mr. W.T. Maring, Sordar Raid Kyrdem presided over the function.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Rymbai lauded the organisers of the meet which would give the students a chance to expose their talents in the field of sports, besides their academic activities. He urged upon the Raid Madan Kyrdem to continue with the good work and promote sports activities in the rural areas. He congratulated the winners in different events and called upon them to strive hard so that they could reach higher level and bring laurels to the school, District and the State as a whole.

The day ended with prize distribution to the winners and the overall best school was bagged by Kyrdem Presbyterian Secondary School followed by the King of Kings Secondary School, Mawkyrdep.
