Press Release No:692/04 SHG FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT CONCLUDED Shillong, October 26, 2004: The Football Tournament, organised by Self Help Groups at Madan Mawkhar, concluded on October 25, 2004, where Mr. P.T. Sawkmie, Co-Chairman, State Planning Board and local MLA was the Chief Guest. Altogether, 18 teams, including SHGs of the area took part in the tournament. The final match was played between Umroi Madan and Umroi Laban, where the former beat the latter by 4-1. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Sawkmie urged the youths to strive and work hard in order to achieve success, either in sports or in life. Saying that optimism is a key to success, he urged upon them to always have a positive thinking. He added that at present, people want success in an easy way, therefore have strayed by taking the wrong path. He congratulated the participants and the organisers of the tournament. The winning team carried away a trophy and a cash prize of Rs. 3000/-. Others speaking on the occasion were Mr. K.W. Marbaniang, DO, Soil Conservation and Mr. J.S. Mawroh, Secretary, Madan Mawkhar. |

Press Release No:693/04 WORKSHOP ON POST LITERACY PROGRAMME AT NONGPOH Shillong, October 26, 2004: A workshop on Post Literacy Programme, organised by the Ri Bhoi District Literacy Society, was inaugurated on October 25, 2004 by the Deputy Commissioner, Ri Bhoi District, Mr. W.L. Lyngdoh at the Science Hall, Nongpoh. Among others who attended the workshop included school teachers, BDOs, NGOs and social workers. The main aim of the workshop is to consolidate the basic literacy skill of speaking, reading, writing and problem solving to transform a person into a literate so that he can be a productive, social and economic asset to the community. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Lyngdoh expressed appreciation to the resource persons from the State Resource Centre (SRC), NEHU, Shillong for their effort in making the programme a success through their lectures on different relevant topics. He informed the gathering that the programme would be started by December 1, 2004 after completing the two phase training where 25 coordinators would be selected from the District. Adding that ‘it is true that illiterates can do many things, but it is also true that they can do better if they are literate’, he urged upon the teachers and volunteer teachers to be reliable and responsible in spreading their knowledge to the people of the District. |
