Press Release No:678/04 PHYSICAL TEST FOR POSTS OF EXCISE CONSTABLES Shillong, October 19, 2004: The Assistant Commissioner of Excise, East Khasi Hills District, Shillong, has informed that the physical test for candidates of East and West Khasi Hills and Ri Bhoi District for the post of Excise Constables will be held from November 4-10, 2004 at 7:00 A.M. at the Jawaharlal Nehru Sports Complex at Polo, Shillong. The test will be held in batches as per dates mentioned in the call notice already issued to the applicants. Candidates receiving the call letter and also those who fail to receive the call letter should report to the Office of the Assistant Commissioner of Excise, East Khasi Hills District, Shillong, before October 29, 2004, during office hours for further necessary action. |

Press Release No:679/04 38,199 CHILDREN VACCINATED IN RI BHOI Shillong, October 19, 2004: The District Medical and Health Officer, Ri Bhoi District, Nongpoh, has informed that 38,199 children within the age group of 0-5 years have benefited by the four days Intensified Pulse Polio Immunisation (IPPI) programme. The DM & HO attributed the success of the programme to cooperation between the people, health workers, headmen and social organisations. |

Press Release No:680/04 UMIAM SPORTS CLUB EMERGED CHAMPION Shillong, October 19, 2004: The Football Tournament organised by the Umroi Sports Club, concluded at Umroi Playground on October 16, 2004, where Umiam Sports Club defeated Dawki Sports Club by 6-3. The Chief Guest on the day was Mr. R.G. Lyngdoh, MLA Laitumkhrah Constituency, while Mr. S.W. Rymbai, local MLA, was the Guest of Honour. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Lyngdoh, while congratulating both the teams, praised the talents of the youth and appreciated the efforts of the organisers in organising such an event. “Sports and Games foster friendship, unity and brotherhood among the youth besides physical fitness”, he said and called upon them to keep on practicing and work hard with a sporting spirit so that they could one day outshine and reach higher tournaments at the State and National level. He further urged the youth to shun violence and maintain peace for the overall development of the State. The programme ended with prize distributions to both the teams. |

Press Release No:681/04 DANCING AND SINGING COMPETITION AT NONGPOH Shillong, October 19, 2004: With an aim to raise fund for the Silver Jubilee Celebration, the Ri Bhoi Youth Federation (RBYF), Nongpoh Circle, organised a singing and dancing competition on October 16, 2004 at St. Paul’s Auditorium, Nongpoh, wherein Ms. D. Phawa, EAC, Nongpoh was the Chief Guest and Mr. E. Shanpru, DHO was the Guest of Honour. Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Phawa congratulated the RBYF for organising such an event which brings young talents from different parts of the District under one platform thereby promoting harmony, love and brotherhood. She further congratulated the organisation for having served the people for 25 long years and expressed hope that the organisation will continue in the same path in the years to come. The programme ended with prize distribution to the winners. |

Press Release No:682/04 WORLD FOOD DAY CUM RABBI CAMPAIGN 2004 AT UMDEN Shillong, October 19, 2004: The District Agriculture Office, Nongpoh, in collaboration with the Seng Samla Umden Pyllun, organised World Food Day on October 15, 2004 at Umden, Umroi. The function was attended by farmers of the village and its surrounding areas. The programme included training on winter vegetable cultivation and control measures on pests and diseases of paddy and vegetables. On the day, seeds were also distributed to the farmers. |

Four schools participated in the competition wherein Mr. B.P. Sharma of Government School Patharkhmah bagged the 1st prize followed by Ms. N. Maiong of Umrit Presbyterian Secondary School and Ms. L.M. Wahlang of St. Peter’s Secondary School. |

Press Release No:684/04 GOVERNMENT RELEASES FUNDS UNDER SSA Shillong, October 19, 2004: The Director of Elementary and Mass Education and State Project Director Sarva Siksha Abhiyan State Mission Authority of Meghalaya (SSASMAM) has informed that the State Government has released Rs. 1,37,70,000/- to different Deputy Inspectors of Schools in the State of Meghalaya covering 645 Adhoc LP Schools under SSA and 200 Pre-Primary Schools under OB being the amount due for six months with effect from 01-03-2004 to 31-08-2004. The amount so released is Rs. 1,16,10,000/- only under SSA and Rs. 21,60,000/- under OB. The amount due for each school Adhoc LP School under SSA is Rs. 3000/- per month and for each Pre-Primary School under OB is Rs. 1800/- per month. The authorities under all the concerned schools covered under SSA and OB are requested to inquire at their respective Deputy Inspector of Schools office, the District Mission Coordinator of the Districts or the State Project District, SSASMAM, C/o Directorate of Elementary and Mass Education, Laitumkhrah, Shillong, at the earliest. |

Press Release No:685/04 MEETING ON WORKERS’ ACTS HELD Shillong, October 19, 2004: The first special group meeting to discuss on implementation of Workers’ Act in North Eastern States was held here today at Hotel Pinewood. The meeting was chaired by Mr. Baleshwar Rai, Additional Secretary, Labour Ministry, Government of India and was attended by other officials of the Central and State Governments. It may be mentioned that different Acts for the welfare of the workers have be enacted by the Parliament which are still to be implemented by many States Governments. Kerela, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Delhi and Pondicherry are the only States where these Acts have already been implemented. |

Press Release No:686/04 WORKSHOP ON DISASTER RISK MANAGEMENT HELD Shillong, October 19, 2004: The District Disaster Risk Management Committee, Ri Bhoi District, Nongpoh, organised a two-day workshop on “District Disaster Risk Management”. The workshop which began on October 18, 2004 at the Science Hall, Nongpoh, was attended by District Officers and different NGOs of the District. The Deputy Commissioner, Ri Bhoi District, inaugurated the workshop. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Lyngdoh said that disasters are a disruption to the functioning of society causing widespread of human, material and environmental losses. Stating that natural disasters usually strike without warning, he said that while it may be difficult to prevent such happenings, it is necessary that we are at least prepared to face such situations so as to minimise losses. Highlighting the objectives of the programme such as multi-hazard preparedness, prevention, mitigation, response and recovery plan, Mr. Lyngdoh urged upon the participants, particularly the NGOs to imbibe as much information as possible and to put into action as and when the situation arises. As part of the two day programme, lectures relating to disaster risk management were given by prominent resource persons of the State. |
