Press Release No 285/04 MAWSIATKHNAM FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT CONCLUDED Shillong, May 3, 2004: The Football Tournament organised by the Seng Samla Mawsiatkhnam concluded at Mawsiatkhnam Ground on May 1, 2004 wherein the Meghalaya Minister for Irrigation, Mr P T Sawkmie, also the local MLA, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. In the final match played between Mawsiatkhnam FC versus Mawlai Combined FC, Mawlai Combined FC defeated Mawsiatkhnam FC by two goals to one and carried away the winners trophy and a cash prize of Rs 4000/-. The runner-up team was awarded a trophy and a cash of Rs. 2000/- . Speaking on the occasion, Mr Sawkmie congratulated both the organizers and participants for the successful tournament. Saying that football is still a predominant game played in the rural areas, he added that participants of urban teams in such local tournament would help the players to develop their skills. Mr Sawkmie also highlighted the various developmental works which would be implemented in the area such as electricity and drinking water. It may be mentioned that a total of 14 teams took part in the Tournament, which started from December 2003. |

Press Release No 286/04 INTER-SCHOOL ATHLETIC MEET CONCLUDED Shillong, May 3, 2004: The Closing Ceremony of the three day Ri Bhoi Inter School Athletic Meet organised by the District Sports Office, Nongpoh was held at NSCA Mini Stadium on April 30, 2004. St. Paul Secondary School, Nongpoh was adjudged the overall team champion, scoring 74 point. Altogether 16 schools from all over Ri Bhoi participated in the Meet. While addressing the gathering, the Chief Guest for the occasion, Mr C Dunai, Special Officer, Sports and Youth Affairs, Shillong appreciated the initiative taken by the District Sports Officer in organising such a Meet. Stating that sport is essential to the overall development of a child, he urged upon teachers and parents to inculcate in them a sense of fairplay and sportsmanship. Earlier, the Chief Guest gave away prizes to the winners of different events including the Best March Past Contingent Trophy to Alpha English Secondary School, Nongpoh, Best Girl’s and Boy’s Team to St. Alfred Secondary School, Marngar and St. Paul’s Secondary School, respectively. Mr. J. Dyngkll of St. Alfred Secondary School was adjudged the Best Male athlete while Miss. B. Rongpit of St. Paul’s Secondary School was adjudged Best Athlete in the female category. |
