Press Release No. 421/04 LEGAL LITERACY CAMPAIGN MEETING HELD Shillong, July 8, 2004: The legal literacy campaign meeting, organised by the District Administration, Williamnagar in collaboration with the Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority, Shillong, was held at the DRDA Hall, Williamnagar, East Garo Hills, on July 7, 2004. The Chief Guest on the occasion was Dr. Milton S Sangma, (Retd.) Pro-Vice Chancellor of the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU). The meeting was attended by the Nokmas, Laskars, Sordars, teachers, students and Government employees of the District. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Sangma said that emphasis should be laid on codification of the Garo customary law so as to enable the people to preserve their tribal identity. “The customary law of the Garos must be strengthened for the benefit of an ordinary man”, he said, while urging the people to maintain their own culture and identity. The key resource persons in the campaign were Mr. A Ch. Momin, Advocate, Mr. B R Marak, Public Prosecutor and Mr. J M Momin, Inspector Weights and Measures. The meeting was presided over by the Deputy Commissioner, East Garo Hills, Mr. E P Kharbhih. While Mr. P R Marak, EAC, gave the welcome address, Mr. B Hajong, ADC delivered the vote of thanks. |

For the post of Library, the date of interview has been fixed from July 19-27, 2004, for the post of Sweeper-cum-Cleaner, the interview will be held on July 27-28, 2004 and for Plumber on July 28, 2004. Press Release No. 424/04 WORKSHOP ON TRANSPORT COMPUTERISATION CONCLUDES Shillong, July 8, 2004: The valedictory function of the two day workshop on Transport Computerization in North Eastern States was held today at the conference hall of the National Informatic Centre, Shillong. The Principal Secretary, Information Technology etc Government of Meghalaya, Mr. W. M. S. Pariat attended the function as the Chief Guest. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Pariat lauded the Central Government for initiating the scheme for computerization of transport departments in all the North Eastern States. Citing the fact that road communication is one of the main bottlenecks in the North East, he felt that the implementation of the scheme would be useful as it can help transcend the physical barriers and also ease the functioning of the transport sector. With public expectations from the Government increasing day by day, he felt that embracing the IT era, with accuracy and speed as its hallmarks, would go a long way in catering to the needs of the common man. Further, Mr. Pariat added that with continued cooperation between the State Governments and the expert personnel of the NIC, the Central Government’s target of implementing the software for transport computerization in all District Transport Offices of the North Eastern States by June 30, 2005, would be achieved. Sharing their views, the participants termed the workshop as beneficial and expressed hope that they would be able the implement the scheme in their respective states. |

Press Release No. 426 /04 CHIEF MINISTER MET WORLD BANK OFFICIAL Shillong, July 8, 2004: The Indian County Director of World Bank, Mr Michael Carter, today called on the Meghalaya Chief Minister, Dr D D Lapang, at the Meghalaya House at New Delhi Mr Carter briefly outlined the World Bank Aid Programme in India and informed about the priority areas and schemes currently being finalised between the World Bank and the Government of India that would be taken up for implementation over the next four years. Mr Carter also informed that the World Bank proposes to establish a flexible framework for the country within which projects and programmes will be taken up. Dr Lapang during the discussion invited Mr Carter to take up some projects in Meghalaya in the priority areas of the State Government with high growth potential which included Tourism Infrastructure in the districts and also rural road network, Oil and Coal mining, Organic foods and fruits, production and marketing of Orchids and also floriculture and Mega Hydro Power Projects. Expressing his thanks to Mr Carter, Dr Lapang also invited the Indian County Director of World Bank to visit Meghalaya for familiarising himself with the potentials of the State. Appreciating the courtesy extended by the Chief Minister, Mr Carter assured of World Bank’s interest in the North East and that he is personally looking forward for a fruitful association with the State which he planned to visit during August next. In the meeting, the Chief Minister was accompanied by a team of senior officials. |
