Press Release No-090/04 ANTI LEPROSY DAY AT WARMAWSAW Shillong, January 31, 2004: The Ri Bhoi District Leprosy Society, Nongpoh, had on January 30, 2004, organised the Martyrs’ Day and Anti Leprosy Day at the premises of Warmawsaw PHC, where Dr. S Kharmalki, Zonal Leprosy Officer, Shillong was the Chief Guest. The programme included a two-day training and interaction between the people of the area and Health officials on matters relating to Leprosy control and other Health problems. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Kharmalki expressed his appreciation to the District Leprosy Society for organising the programme in the area where most of the people are not yet aware of the important aspects of Leprosy control and health care and at the same time congratulated the Doctors and staff of the Patharkhmah and Warmawsaw PHCs for the training imparted to the people and in creating awareness on how to adopt possible measures to combat this disease and ensure themselves a safe, healthy and happy life. He further informed that Meghalaya has been fighting the disease for the last 28 years and have reached the elimination stage, he added. He therefore, urged the people to cooperate with the Government to make Meghalaya a Leprosy free State. As a mark of respect to those who gave their life for the freedom of the country, a two-minute silence was also observed during the meeting. Lastly, Dr. Kharmalki read out the message of the President of India on the occasion of Anti Leprosy Day. Others who spoke on the occasion were Dr. A K Roy, incharge Warmawsaw PHC, Mr. S Duia, Mr. I Syngkli and Mrs. B Kharshiing, CHO, Nongpoh. The meeting was presided over by Mr. M Dalloi. |
