EX-SERVICEMEN RALLY IN SHILLONG

SHILLONG, DECEMBER 2, 2003: The Director of Sainik Welfare, Meghalaya, Shillong, has informed that the Ex-servicemen Rally will be held on January 10, 2004 at 58 GTC, Happy Valley, Shillong. Among the Civil and Military dignitaries who would be attending the rally, the Governor of Meghalaya will be the Chief Guest. Gifts will also be distributed to deserving ex-servicemen and widows. The Rally will be followed by lunch where a variety entertainment programme will be staged.

For the conveyance to and from the venue for ex-servicemen and widows residing in Jaintia Hills District, one bus will be placed at 06:00 A.M. at the office complex of the Deputy Commissioner, Jowai/MTC Bus Stand Jowai.

INVITATION FOR COLLABORATIVE PROJECT PROPOSALS

SHILLONG, DECEMBER 2, 2003: The Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation, Government of India, invites project proposal from interested institutions/academic universities/non-profit organisations/State Statistical Bureaus, etc., for financial support by the Ministry for taking up methodological/innovative projects/case studies having relevance with the Official Statistical System of India. The broad category of areas of studies are conducting National Resource Accounting under SEEA framework (both physical and monetary) in Goa – Phase II (that is for the Sector other than Land Use, Forest, Iron Ore, Energy & Emission from Transport & Domestic Sectors) and in Uttaranchal (all Sectors), case studies on development of Framework of National Resource Accounting for India based on SEEA – 2003, case studies on environmental impact on Health, computation of Toxic Intensity Rates for selected dirty Industries, filing up gender responsive data gaps needed for policy analysis, methodological studies as suggested by the National Statistical Commission, case studies to meet data gaps of Service Sector and case studies to meet data gaps of informal Sector.

1ST ANNIVERSARY OF SYNJUK TREI LANG HELD

SHILLONG, DECEMBER 2, 2003: The Synjuk Trei Lang (STL) had on December 1, 2003, celebrated its first anniversary at DCLP School Umran Niangbarnai, Ri Bhoi District, where Mr. Nehlang Lyngdoh, Minister of State for Health was the Chief Guest.

While expressing his happiness in associating himself with such an organisation whose aim is to look after the all round development of the village, Mr Lyngdoh appreciated the steps taken by the Synjuk in imparting free tution to students studying from Class IV to Class XII which has been a tremendous help to poor families of the village who cannot provide private tution for their children. He urged the Synjuk to cooperate among themselves so that they can continue to serve the needy people.

Mr. Lyngdoh informed the meeting that the Government of India is implementing developmental schemes and projects. To avail these schemes, NGOs need to register with the Government and complete 3 years from the date of registration. Besides Central funded schemes, he also informed that the State Government has also proposed many schemes to the NGOs. He therefore, urged upon the Synjuk to approach the concerned department and avail the opportunity provided by the Government.

WORLD AIDS DAY CAMPAIGN AT BYRNIHAT

SHILLONG, DECEMBER 2, 2003: As part of the global programme, World AIDS Day was observed at Byrnihat, Ri Bhoi District on December 1, 2003 at the premises of the PHC, Byrnihat. The campaign was jointly organised by the Health Department and the Field Publicity, Government of India, Shillong where Mr. W Mynsong, local MDC was the Chief Guest.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Mynsong lauded the efforts of the organisers in holding such an awareness campaign on AIDS, to alert people about this dreaded disease, which has posed a serious threat to the society and the world over. Although the number of AIDS affected people in Meghalaya are much less compared to other States in the region, he urged upon people to strictly adhere to the preventive measures as well as propagating this awareness to their relatives, friends and neighbours, because prevention is the only solution to this vexed problem.

Earlier, Dr. T Swer, Medical and Health Officer, Ri Bhoi District, in his introductory speech, highlighted about the aims and objectives in observing World AIDS Day, where people are made aware about this disease, its cause and its threat to the human race. He urged upon the people not to neglect those affected by AIDS, but to treat them with love and care.

Among others who spoke on the occasion were Mr. J L P Kynjing, Field Publicity Officer, Shillong, Mr. R Hynniewta, Headman, Mr. P Sun, Teacher, Don Bosco High School, Byrnihat, Mrs. B Kharshiing, PHN, Nongpoh CHC and Mrs. K Newar, PHN, Byrnihat PHC, offered the vote of thanks.

Other programmes of the day were Drawing, Dancing competition and cinema show on AIDS.

MEGHALAYA FAIRS WELL IN SUBROTO MUKHERJEE CUP

Shillong, December 2, 2003: In the Subroto Mukherjee Cup Football Tournament 2003 being currently held at New Delhi, Meghalaya being represented by Good Shepherd Higher Secondary School, Jongsha has won all the four games played so far. In this morning’s game, Good Shephered Higher Secondary School defeated Jabalpur High School of Madhya Pradesh by a solitary goal. Now Meghalaya has qualified for the Quarter Finals.

The Under –14 category will be represented by the Nongnah Higher Secondary School who will be leaving Shillong on the 4th December, 2003.

IPR COMMISSIONER & SECRETARY RETIRES

SHILLONG, DECEMBER 2, 2003: After a long innings of 42 years and 6 months of faithfully serving the Government of Meghalaya under different capacities, the Information & Public Relations Commissioner and Secretary, Mr. P C Chakravarty, finally retired on November 30, 2003. To mark his short yet dynamic stinge of 4 months as the IPR Commissioner and Secretary, a farewell meeting was held at the Office of the DIPR on December 2, 2003. Also present on the occasion was the Meghalaya IPR Minister, Mr. R G Lyngdoh.

Praising the dynamic leadership of the Commissioner and Secretary, Mr. R G Lyngdoh said that in his short term, Mr. Chakravorty has shown great efficiency and has been instrumental in bringing about many changes in the Department. Congratulating him on the completion of his tenure, Mr. Lyngdoh said a befitting tribute to him would be that each member of the staff emulates his example of dynamism and leadership. Stating that the DIPR has a vital role to play in disseminating information to the public on Government initiatives, he urged upon the staff to inculcate good working habits and to continue to forge ahead with dedication.

Terming the day of his retirement as a happy day, as it marks the end of long years in service, Mr. P C Chakravorty stressed on the need to maintain honesty while discharging duties. Drawing from personal experiences, he stressed on the need to develop congenial working environment for maximum productivity.

Also sharing her views on his retirement was the Director IPR, Mrs A M Sangma. The meeting was presided over by Mr P Nongrum, PRO, DIPR.
